Common Pool Light Problems (and What They Usually Mean)
Pool lights don't get a lot of attention until they stop working — and by then, you're usually dealing with more than just a burnt-out bulb. Here's a look at some of the most common issues we see with pool lights, along with photos from a recent job where a failing light finally gave out.
Flickering or Dimming Light
A light that flickers on and off, or seems dimmer than it used to be, is often one of the first warning signs of a failing fixture. This can be caused by a deteriorating bulb, a loose connection, or moisture that's worked its way into the housing over time.
Light That Won't Turn On At All
When a pool light stops working completely, the problem isn't always the bulb itself. It can be the fixture, the wiring, or a breaker issue — which is why a light that suddenly goes dark is worth having looked at rather than just waiting it out.
Corroded or Failing Wiring Connections
The wiring for a pool light runs to a junction box (J-box) near the equipment pad. Over time, these connections can corrode or loosen, which can cause the light to cut out intermittently or trip a breaker.
Cracked or Fogged Lens
Sun exposure, pool chemicals, and age can cause the lens on a pool light to crack or cloud over. Even if the light still technically works, a damaged lens is often a sign the fixture is nearing the end of its life.
GFCI or Breaker Trips
If a breaker or GFCI keeps tripping whenever the pool light is turned on, that's usually an electrical safety feature doing its job — protecting you from a fixture or wiring issue that's already failing.
When It's Time for a Replacement
Once a light starts showing more than one of these issues, patching it usually isn't worth it. In this case, a full replacement fixture was already on hand and ready to go in once the old one was pulled.
